Flight Journal
Our members' journal
Our Flight journal is the core product of the Bird Stamp Society, and is available to members via email or hardcopy. It is a full colour journal with issues in March, June, September and December, usually totalling 32-40 pages.
Key Dates
August 1986 – Bird Stamp Society’s core journal Flight, issue No 1
March 2002 – Flight is commercially printed, but still in black and white
March 2012 – some colour is introduced to the journal
June 2017 – Flight becomes a full colour journal
Each issue features a range of bespoke articles provided by BSS members, as well as a number of regular features.
Bespoke articles
These are quite often submitted as a series on a particular subject e.g. A Search for Lost Birds on Stamps, Prehistoric Birds, National Birds on Stamps, Bird Nests on Stamps, Philippine Definitives, The Resplendent Quetzel to name a few.
There are also individual articles on, for example, stamp designers, cachets and covers, forgeries and replicas, and bird species.
Images from some of these articles are shown below.

Regular features
New Listings from the previous three months and New Species on Stamps are always featured in each Flight journal, and prove very popular with our members.
We welcome correspondence from our members and often feature a Postbag in the journal.
Upcoming major Stamp Shows, Fairs and Events/Exhibitions are also listed in each journal, and cover not just the UK but worldwide when we can source the information.
We have a Bourse page, an internal market place enabling members to sell, buy, exchange or give away philatelic material to fellow members, and includes bird stamps, covers, whole collections, postal stationery and literature.
And we also have regular features on popular collecting themes, such as Belgian Buzins. Images from some of these regular features in our journal are shown below.

Flight Back Issues
Every back issue of the Flight journal is available in the Members area of the website. From Volume One, Issue No 1 in August 1986 until Volume 26, Issue No 2 in December 2011, the journal was a black and white publication. These have been scanned and optimised, so they are searchable when open, and converted to pdfs.
The journal is available as a hard copy or a pdf (downloadable from the website), depending on your membership option.
A FREE SAMPLE COPY of the Flight journal (March 2026) is available HERE
